At translation agency Mettaal, we also translate texts into Dutch. Our office is in Rotterdam after all; one of the largest cities in the Netherlands. Rotterdam is also the largest port city in Europe. This makes the city a true melting pot of cultures and languages, which means translations are required.
Dutch people are known for speaking the best English among all non-English-speaking countries. Of course, there are also many Dutch people who can speak another language, such as German, Turkish or Arabic. However, we still recommend translating texts for Dutch people into Dutch,
because a text is best received when it is in someone’s native language. This way, the reader is better addressed and they feel as if the text has been written especially for them. On top of that, when a text is written in another language, there is a high chance that nuances will be missed, even if the gist of the text is understood. Sometimes this is just unfortunate, but it can also have serious consequences. By using a translation, you can prevent unprofessional mistakes, and sometimes even accidents and lawsuits. An ambiguity or error in an employment contract or instruction manual can have unpleasant consequences.
Dutch or Flemish?
If Dutch people watch Flemish TV, they will notice that they can understand Flemish perfectly. This could be because Flemish is a dialect of Dutch and not an official language. Still, there are some clear differences that allow a Flemish person to tell whether a text was written by a Dutch person or a Belgian. Often, the differences are in word choice. In Dutch, they use the word ‘recyclen’ for recycling and in Flemish they use the word ‘recycleren’. One of our favourite examples is the word 'kapstok' (coat rack). Did you know that a Dutch person often has far fewer coat racks at home than a Flemish person? In Flanders, the word ‘kapstok’ is also commonly used to refer to a clothes hanger (kleerhanger). Most Dutch people don't know this, so this can lead to funny situations. At Mettaal, you can choose which variant of Dutch you want for your text. If your text is specifically intended for Belgium, we will have it translated by one of our Flemish translators.
