Goodbye

At the end of an internship, the time comes to say goodbye. This time, we said goodbye to Allistair, an English translator. He has successfully completed his internship at Mettaal and can now focus fully on finishing his degree.

Saying goodbye to a colleague is an occasion we at Mettaal do not let pass unnoticed. But how do we mark the occasion? We dug out the game ‘Hitster’ again. The first round had a nail-biting finish, with Allistair emerging as the winner. The second game was a little less exciting (he destroyed us).

Where to start? – I thought before I wrote this text. That same thought occupied my mind when I started looking for an internship. After a long, stressful search I ended up at translation agency Mettaal in the vibrant city of Rotterdam. I set foot in the office and wandered into a calm and homey, yet professional setting.

In this cozy building, I got acquainted with the business life and I learned about project management, communicating with customers and translators, and of course about translating and editing. Aside from the theoretical aspects of the craft, I also learned step-by-step to take on the role of an active part of the team and to carve my own path from here.

Learning knows no end. Despite everything I have picked up on here at Mettaal, there is always room for growth. By familiarizing myself with the process and tools used at Mettaal, I am able to adapt more easily to new work environments that employ their own methods. I have also gained a more profound understanding of the possibilities in the field. In the end, it does not matter if other companies use the exact same tools—the more candles you light, the more flames you have to light new candles with.

Thank you very much for your supervision! I hope Mettaal has also learned a thing or two from supervising me.
